Domestic Short Hair - Gray and white - Smitty - Medium - Senior
SMITTY Hi, my name is Smitty. I used to live in a real mansion on Airline Highway. There were a LOT of bedrooms, each with its own door and nice do not disturb signs for the doorknobs, and private baths, too (even though people had long ago stolen all the little soaps and towels). I lived there with a colony of other cats, including my mother and father and my five sisters and brothers. We loved the place. It had definitely seen better days when the people with suitcases lounged on the beds, watched tv, and ordered pizza or Chinese, but we truly enjoyed it just the way it was, sort of settling into seedy obscurity. Let me tell you, rundown hotel life (when there are no employees or visitors) is the best a homeless kitty could ask for: we always had a pretty good roof over our heads, fairly good walls to keep the cold winds and rain out, windows everywhere looking out on deliciousI mean, entertainingbirds, beds all over the place for napping and a non-stop supply of miceI mean, protein. We all thought our accommodations were superb. I guess nothing that good can last. One day we woke to extreme danger!! A horrible sound of machines outside, louder and louder as an army of trucks advanced on us. A demolition team!!!! Coming right for our hotel!!!! Women and children first! our general cried as I and the other boys in our militia tried to lead everyone to safety. It wasnt easy. The ladies were flying in all directions and some of the kittens had to be carried bodily from one room to the next as we tried to round up everyone and lead them away from the battlefield and to secure hiding places. Each time we thought we were reasonably safe, there came the deafening sound of machinery again, worse than howitzers, closer and closer. It was bone-chilling! Have you EVER seen a giant wrecking ball suddenly hurled through the wall of your home? The kittens were crying as if the world were ending and we really though it was! Then a miracle happened. After days choking in the dust, of not daring to eat or drink except at night when the horrible bedlam stopped, of retreating from one room to the next as the one before was completely destroyed behind us, just as we were all huddled miserably in the last standing section of our hotel, so terribly scared but waiting bravely for our defeat, some people arrived, nice people, with soft voices, calling us to come to their little crates! Theyve got to be kidding, I said. (You have to understand, I wasnt used to trusting anybody waving a trap). HURRY UP AND GET IN A CRATE!! the general hissed. I could see him driving the ladies, the kittens, my family closer and closer to the kind people. Not me, I whispered to myself. But I watched as all of the cats I knew and loved, even my little sister Chloe and my brother Smittie, were carried off in those boxes! I just HAD to go with them. Whatever comes, I thought, they need me. Its a good thing I did decide to go, too. We all came to Spaymart, the safest place in the world for a needy cat, where we got awfully good food, lots and lots of loving care, and the hope of someday finding real guardians and forever homes that wrecking balls never destroy. My whole family got adoptedlittle Chloe and Smitzie, too. I wish I could have gone with them, but something happened to me that dashed my hopes. There was something awfully wrong with my ear. It hurt me so badly, even though I tried and tried to scratch that stabbing pain away. The tumor had started appearing outside my ear and the kind Spaymart people noticed right away. They found a good doctor for me and even though my surgery cost a lot of money, they had it done faster than I could refuse. But my operation was bigger and longer than any of us ever dreamed it would be. I was a very sick guy for months afterwards, and my Spaymart friends loved me through everything and with their help, I pulled through. They told me I was a real hero, so brave, and a very loving guy on top of it. Even with my deformed left ear, they keep telling me not to worry, there IS the perfect guardian somewhere just waiting to disco
